From Incarceration to Inspiration: Kim Carter’s Unyielding Spirit

The bright lights of The Jennifer Hudson Show illuminated not just another celebrity but a beacon of hope and strength – Kim Carter. Her journey, beautifully portrayed by Jennifer Hudson in the anthology *Tell it Like a Woman*, directed by the talented Taraji P. Henson, is a testament to resilience in the face of adversity.

Growing up “on the wrong side of the tracks”, Kim’s life was no easy tale. Raised by a single mother with four children, she faced a world with scarce community support. School was more a refuge for a meal than an educational sanctuary. From seeking validation in all the wrong places to facing the dark alleys of substance abuse, Kim’s life echoed the struggles of many Black women in the 80s, trapped in the chokehold of the so-called ‘War on Drugs’. This era, marked by a tough-on-crime approach, incarcerated countless Black and brown individuals, including Kim.

But the prison walls couldn’t contain Kim’s spirit. Rising from the ashes, she founded the Time for Change Foundation, a haven for disenfranchised individuals. The foundation not just offers shelter but also hope and guidance, helping individuals transition from adversity to prosperity.

Yet, her journey didn’t stop at setting up a foundation. Imagine the emotion and pride one feels when seeing their struggles and victories portrayed on screen! Hudson, embodying Kim’s essence, brought forth the raw emotion and strength that Kim embodies. A segment of the show where Jennifer, in her portrayal of Kim, urges others to stand up and rise above adversity, showcased the transformative power of perseverance.

It was a touching moment when Keisha, one of the many women Kim has impacted, stepped onto the stage. Living in the Phoenix Square Apartment Complex, built by the Time for Change Foundation, Keisha’s journey from facing expulsion six months before graduation to becoming a registered nurse speaks volumes of the indomitable spirit Kim instills in those she helps.

The highlight, undoubtedly, was the announcement of Kim Carter’s book – a chronicle of her life’s ups and downs, promising to be an illuminating read for anyone seeking inspiration. As the applause echoed and the show transitioned, one thing became clear: Kim Carter’s story is a shining example that with belief, resilience, and the right support, anyone can turn their life around.

Tell us more about the BBOP?

The BBOP (Black and Brown Opportunity for Profit) Center directly responded to the historic systemic inequities that black and brown women face in accessing capital and access to the resources and technology information needed to build, grow, scale, and scale investable businesses.

After the pandemic, it became clear that those that were hit the hardest, during the pandemic were Black and brown women and that the recovery rate from the loss of wages, the loss of education, the loss of your children’s time in school, the social effect of being isolated, was going to have a deep and a significant financial impact in their lives. And it could take a couple of generations to recover from that.

So given the fact that we still are suffering from inequality across the board here in America, it became time to create a system in place a system that actually works for Black and brown women so that we can begin to build generational wealth and a place that’s welcoming and designed to uplift and support these women. And so therein lies the BBOP. It started as an idea that we could make come to fruition with our grand opening.

The BBOP is 10,000 square feet of space with 14 offices, three conference rooms, a huge cafeteria, and a childcare center made specifically for these women. So I’m excited about that.

Kim Carter and Her Amazing Work!

Kim Carter and Her Amazing Work!

Nothing can stand in the way of Kim Carter’s determination, vision, and God-given mission. She is one example of a woman who proves that not all heroes wear caps or that the path to achievement must look a certain way. Kim is on a quest to level the playing field, having overcome a difficult past to create a brighter future for others. She goes out of her way to provide underrepresented women of color an opportunity to flourish. This is her narrative, her triumphant path of resilience.

Cox: I’m excited to speak with you about BBOP and its opening. But before we start, I want to know a little more about your journey during your time in San Bernardino and between trips to the Bay.

Carter: I could think about all the times that I was met with resistance from white men when I tried to create opportunities for women and children in San Bernardino Michael, and some of them were millionaires who fought against me. These men would get out of bed just to come to the city council meetings to try and stop what I wanted to do to bring the city and the people a necessary resource.

Cox: What were they fighting against when they showed up to the city council in opposition?

Carter: There was this lot of dirt, Michael, that had been vacant and unused for about twenty-five years. I wanted to use it to create affordable housing. But they wouldn’t have it and had an issue with it. So, this showed me how people could really be against others having the basic necessities.

Cox: You had many moments like these where people tried to stop you from doing things for the greater good. What is something you always take away from these experiences?

Carter: That we have to really start working to create our own economy that works for us. We need to really be our own banks. Listen, we have the manpower and people equipped with enough education and experience to get the jobs done. But it’s the resources we need to leverage all of these things.

Community Activist Kim Carter shares story of struggle and success at CSUSB’s Womxn’s Leadership Conference

From homelessness and incarceration to becoming an affordable housing developer, Kim Carter has made an incredible transformation, and since then, has been changing the lives of others through her community activism and the Time for Change Foundation, in which she founded.

Carter visited the Cal State San Bernardino campus on March 22 to tell her story during the Womxn’s Leadership Conference as part of Womxn’s History Month.

After being introduced and called a “shero” by Nicole Henley, CSUSB associate professor of health science and human ecology, Carter walked on stage and immediately drew the audience into her story of struggle and success.

“Thirty years!” she emphasized, revealing that she has been clean and sober for three decades, with the audience erupting in applause.

“I’m the little engine that could,” she said, describing herself as being a zero at one time. “I was absent in mind, I was absent in body, I was absent in spirit. I was hooked on crack-cocaine. I was the same one you see out here on those bus benches wrapped up in 50 bags of plastic trying to stay warm.
